During the early part of the nineteeth century an exceeding popular quilt pattern called Garden Maze was introduced about 1840's. This eye catching pattern was sometimes called The Sun Dial, too. Although this quilt doesn't date quite that early, I'm of the opinion it is about 1870's - 1880's.

It is a bold and graphic quilt in a two color combination set on white muslin.  The quilt consist of a row of red and mustard blocks and a row of white muslin blocks quilted in a flower pattern. All blocks are hand pieced measuring 7" square.   Each block is then set on a diamond grid., then filled with quilting stitches.  The quilting is all hand stitched measuring 7 stitches to the inch.  The border of the quilt is 7-1/4" wide and  is quilted in a feather/plume stitching.  The quilt edging is of red fabric sewn to the front, then turned and hand stitched to the back.  Backing of quilt is white muslin.

One of my favorite likes about this quilt, not only for it boldness of color, but the quilting pattern has been hand stenciled.  Some of the lines are still evident as the quilt has never been used or laundered.

Size of the quilt is 76" x 78".

Condition:  Is very nice, however, being that it has never been used or laundered, you will find oxidation from storage.
