Love this blue calico sunbonnet with its two different calico prints! The bonnet dates from the late 19th century or the early 20th century. It is slatted bonnet, treadle machine sewn, with black twill tape ties under the chin. Twill tape, also, slightly gathers the back of bonnet.
Inside of the brim is lined in a cream calico made up of "pockets" in which cardboard strips are inserted. (the strips were easily removed for laundering). The strips or "slats" stiffen the brim keeping the face better protected from the sun.
Bonnet measures 14" long from the center front to the bottom of the apron. 20" from one side to the other along the face area, not including the apron. 16" along the neck line from one side to the other.
Condition: A nice bonnet that has been worn. No damage that I found.
