I find it remarkable to find such beautiful fine examples from the early part of the 1800's such as these cream silk stockings with the initials XS and the date of 1841. The silk of the stockings is very luxurious to the touch. Soft and finely woven. Initials and date are embroidered.
Tiny ribbed area at the top of the stockings. The back seam is barely detectable with it being finely stitched. The heel area has been reinforced on the inside with a piece of cotton homespun. Whether this was done at the making of the stockings or done later. I rather think it was done at the making as there is no evidence of repair.
Some darning stitches on the inside of the toe area. This work can be seen from the inside but not detected on the outside of stockings.
Length from top to the toe is 23" long. The measurement from the toe to heel 8-3/4" long.
