This fabulous Italian needlework trousseau bed sheet dating from the early 1900's, is home sewn of wonderful soft cotton sheeting material. Now, the workmanship of the needlework makes this sheet truly outstanding ~ the raised flowers and padded stitches are so impressive ~ intermingled with tiny candlewicking embellishing the small flowers ~ to the delicate drawn thread of the open work.
It is made of three width of fabric, each 30" wide with flat felled seams. Over all size of the sheet is 98" long x 90" wide. It features hemstitching border, including a 24" sheet return.
This gorgeous example of handiwork is 54" in length and, at the center, 12" wide. Centered is an urn-style motif with perhaps monogram initials. Again, so encrusted with candlewicking and padded embroidery it is hard to say.
Below the urn, framed with padded stitches and placed on drawnwork, the words" socni" and on the other side "felxcy" I believe a loose translation is about happiness. Happiness would be just to view this extraordinary beautiful piece of art. Surely, it would make you smile.
The sheet has been laundered ~ clean but not pressed. No damage that I found. I will say this, I wonder at one time, the letters of the motto may have had some colored thread which faded out when laundered.
