Here's a charming calico cloth seed or sewing bag from the 1860-1880's time period. The madder color and pattern of the fabric is in perfect scale to the size of the bag. The inside of the bag is lined in green silk, turned over the top edge of the calico and hand stitched.
Both sides of the bag are also hand sitched and then overcast stitch along the very edge. The drawstring appears to be a narrow piece of silk ribbon that has been twisted. If not, possibly strands of string.
Size of the bag is 5-1/2" long x 7-1/2" across the width of the bottom edge. Condition: one tiny hole in the calico on the one side. This is from my personal collection, which was collected about 20 years ago. It was purchased from the New England area.
