A Victorian or Edwardian era white cotton petticoat. This lovely lingerie undergarment item has a whitework embroidered wide over ruffle of a leaf design. The ruffle is 14" in width. A pointed scallop trim finishes the hem line.
Directly above, in the body of the skirt, five rows of tucks. The back seam is completely closed to the waist (in other words, no back opening). A partial drawstring, at the back, adjust the fit around the waist. Plus aids the ease of getting the garment on/off. A laundry tag, with the name Phillips, is sewn to the front of waistband.
Measurement: It is 37-1/4" long from the waist to hem. 27" around the waist but would adjust about 2" larger.
Condition: Freshly laundered and pressed. One long ago mend on the front side of skirt near waist. A few minor holes one would expect for the age. See photo: A small slit on one of the leaves of ruffle. It almost look as if it had been cut.
A gorgeous piece from the past.
