Victorian silk embroidery on linen square with unfinished edges. The piece is signed by J & M Prufert, Niagara Falls, N.Y so perhaps it was a friendship or presentation piece or this was a company which distributed stamped goods to finish.
Perhaps this lovely piece was meant to serve as a doily, possibly on a dressing table or was intended for another purpose.
Whatever the intent the workmanship of the embroidery is nicely executed. The embroidered "fans" are worked in a golden glow color of variegated thread. Worked both on the natural linen and tulle netted background. Center of the piece is of natural linen with a scallop design worked in this same variegated thread.
My thought to quilt the piece as a focal point of a crazy quilt, however, I am sure someone else might like to admire this in a different way.
The square measures 12" square. Condition is very nice.
