A simple baby garment with extraordinary fine needlework from the mid 19th century. About 1850's or perhaps earlier. This little undershirt or chemise is of homespun linen in a very fine weave. Completely hand stitched with tiny, tiny stitches.
Even tiny little gussets set in under the arms. Front opening. Edging the neck line, a narrow fancy needlework lace in a scallop design.
Size: 8" across from shoulder to shoulder. From shoulder to hem 7-1/2"long. Chest area is 16" completely around.
Condition: For the age, good but some flaws. A few small holes in the fabric.
Size of the garment would be suitable for dressing a doll or just admire the beautiful workmanship done so long ago. Truly a work of art.
