An attractive M S Superior Civil War era paper mache doll with an absolutely splendid pink calico fabric dress. Made in the 1860's, the shoulder plate doll has black curly hair and painted eyes. The shoulder plate is tied to the body. Body and legs are of cloth. Arms and hands are of leather. The doll stands 16-1/2" tall.
This country lass is wearing her original white undergarments but underneath her bloomers....and if you love primitive...you will love her one piece red and white knit underwear with attached red stockings trimmed in black. What a treat for those of us who love the "simple life"...and a bit of color!
Her dress is also endearing of a pink and white calico check with a print of wheat shaft dancing across the fabric. Simple but charming, white china buttons fasten the front, from the neck to hem. Small collar with a trim of tatted lace plus embellishment of a narrow trim the length of the dress opening. The dress is completely handmade and hand stitched.
Here are more details: The doll has the paper label of M S Superior # 2015 on the neck. Some color loss to the black curls etc. The leather arms and hands show peeling of the leather plus her one slipper shows the strains of wear. The dress for the age, is remarkably nice. I noticed just a tiny hole in the skirt but really didn't find much else.
A delightful plaything of the past.
