An early 1860's Victorian autograph book ~ Album of Beauty ~ with five engravings of young women. Published by Leavitt & Allen, N, Y. The covers are tooled red leather in a leaf and flower design. A diamond shape inset of green and gold gilt. Page edge leaf are also gilt. Inked inside on the end page, the name of Maria L. (Louise) Jones, Cincinnati, Ohio, written in beautiful calligraphy. There are nine entries. Some are quite long and very poignant. Particular one written Dec 3,1862, with a handwritten notation killed at Stone River, Dec. 31, 1862. (This battle of the Civil War was one of the bloodiest for both sides ~ a touch of history here). Most all entries date 1861 and 1862. I also found a couple of short newspaper clippings and a lovely Civil War era paper doily with nice saying tucked in the book.
Size of the book is 8-1/2" wide x 9-1/2"long. 3/4" thick.
Condition: Wear with age of the leather. Book is intact but somewhat loose at the top edge of the spine. Some paper loss to the two inside frontal pages, at the side edge. (see photo). Some foxing on this page, too Otherwise the pages are clean.
