The Gatherings is offering this Victorian handkerchief or hankie from the 1880's era. It is a chromolithograph printed hankie. A charming subject matter of an older child teaching a younger girl how to dance.
Another child is playing the flute, while in the background, a fourth child is clapping. Beneath the print, the title, THE FIRST STEP. A black twig border of twining flowers edges the handkerchief. It is American made.
Size is 12" x 13". The center picture, itself, measures 6-1/8" x 7-3/8". One fabric edge is a selvage. The remainder are raw edges.
The handkerchief is good condition except for one pin dot hole in the border and some oxidation over the years.
Note: This handkerchief is pictured in the J.J. Murphy book on handkerchiefs, page 42, Plate 83.
