Here's a wonderful vintage sock darner from the day when darning socks was a necessity.  The wooden egg shaped darner is made of a light and dark wood inlay.  Three darker bands around the lighter wood. 

Size of the darner measures 3" long x 2-1/2" wide.  It is 6-3/4" circumference around the center portion.

The darner is time-worn, showing many pricks of the needle.  An indication it darned many a sock.  Perhaps it was a favorite darner to use or perhaps the only one in the sewing box.  It just seems the wear and usefulness makes it just that more charming.
