Horray for the red, white and blue! This fantastic Americana Uncle Sam parade costume dates from the early 1900's. A three piece outfit consisting of coattails, pants and tri-corner hat. Made of a cotton muslin, the coattails are a print of white stars on blue fabric. The added embellishment of the red and white stripe collar and cuffs, on the jacket, compliment the red and white stripe pants. Red pom pom balls add a touch to the pants at the hem. Elastic waistband to adjust the fit at the waist on the pants. Jacket has two snaps to close the front opening. The tri corner hat is made of both the stripe fabric and the star fabric. Yellow fringed fabric is sewn to the edge of one side of the hat. A red pom pom accents the point. Hat is lined inside with buckram.
An incredible find, the fabric of this adult costume looks to be as new as at the time it was made. There is no fading ~ the colors are still bold and fabric crisp. It is home sewn on a treadle machine. The elastic (still has stretch) may possibly have been replaced at some time. The reason I say, the casing of the leg opening, more than likely, had elastic at one time but has been taken out and never replaced.
Here are the measurements: Jacket ~ 15" across from shoulder to shoulder. 30" chest. 30" waist. Pants ~ with the elastic the waist would stretch to 30". Length of leg: 28-1/2" long. Hat ~ 18-1/2" long the length of the hat. 9-1/2" wide from center to the point.
What a great display item for the 4th of July! Truly a one of a kind piece of Americana history.
