Under clothing, especially petticoats of the Victorian era, were made of fabrics of lovely colored prints. Cottons, wools and silks, mainly, but other times of linen and wool. Truly beautiful hand work could be found on these masterpieces.
A mix of hand and machine sewing can be found on this floral pattern petticoat from the later Victorian era. It is a flower print in a brownish maroon color. I will not say for sure, but the fabric feels to be a linsey woolsy. Sweet ruffle trims the hem line.
It is completely lined in a cotton lining fabric. A small velvet trim faces the inside of the hem. Waist is made straight across the front with a series of gathers, guage pleats, at the back. Hook and eye secures the waist band.
Measurements: 38" long at the center back, waist to hem. The waistband is 22" around. Circumference of the hem is 106".
Condition: Some damage to the fabric at the front (see photos). Some holes to other areas of the fabric. Still with reasonable care the garment can be enjoyed for years to come.
