Possibly Pennsylvania German, a hand embroidery cross stitch in turkey redwork wall hanging. This wonderful dog stitchery is dated 1890 with the motto underneath Zum Andenken ~ in memory of. I am sure, a tribute to a pet.
The embroidery is on a pique fabric in a waffle weave. 1-5/8" wide crochet in white trimmed in red embellishes the edge of the hanging. Size is 21-1/2" wide x 31" long.
Condition is good but not perfect. The piece has been lovingly used and laundered so the red embroidery is somewhat faded, although still very decent. A small break of red thread in the crochet edging (see photo). A small amount of oxidation from storage. My assumption this was a splash back used behind a wash stand in a bedroom. A neat one-of-a-kind piece.
